So Dom helped me get tf2 to work and run efficiently on my laptop. Now one of my roomies used the stuff dom helped me with (drop to directx 8.1) and he can actually get the program to run now but when he joins a game it works for 3 seconds and then black screens and the sound repeats.

Any one have optimizations to make the game run smoother?

That sounds like a sound card error.  Try updating the driver for that.

or you could scour This Page for answers.  Be warned that it is VERY in depth and long.

We (being my comp sci roomies) think that is a memory error of some sort because the screen goes black as well

I've had the same problems for awhile with HL2.  It could be a memory prob but that usually gives you the blue screen of death, also when I overclocked my cpu to where it's unstable it would freeze and then repeat the sound.
