My turn for computer problems.  I'm so fucking psyched!

So I'm running Windows XP Media Center Edition on my desktop.  Currently typing from my laptop.  Nothing in wrong with the laptop.

Explorer continually crashes on the desktop.  Like clockwork.  It'll restart about 5 seconds later and run normally for another 5.  Then it will blink out of existance and do it all over again.  and again.  and again.

I've tried to run NOD32, but that causes the whole computer to freeze about halfway though the virus checking process.  I ran a diagnostic check on all the hardware (memory, motherboard, hard drives, yadda) and they seem to be fine.

I'm guessing its a virus and am therefore prepared to reformat and reinstall my whole goddamn computer.  Posting here to see if this is a problem that can be solved without all that.

is there any way to run NOD32 on a quick scan and not a full blown scan?

Not seeing an option for quick scan.  NOD32 has been going for 30 minutes now, so I'm hopeful it'll just keep goin.

    *crash edit:

It went for 45 minutes and didn't find shit.

    you're in safe mode, right?

    copied from a google search:

might help to set it so that it doesn't restart upon a system failure
[Control Panel ---> System ---> Advanced ---> Startup and Recovery ---> Settings ---> uncheck "Automatically restart" ---> Click OK (twice) ]
and then see if you get a BSOD.  If so, get all available information, including the stop error name and number.

The system isn't crashing.  Only Explorer.exe.   All the open windows, icons and taskbar just blink out of existence.  Then about 5 seconds the taskbar and icons come back up, but none of the open windows reappear.

It happens in safe mode too.  Computer hasn't actually crashed or BSOD'd yet. <-- probably funny to everyone but me.

BSOD edit: (here's the crap that isn't generic)

    DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Stob, you can try some virus tcheking tool that boot your computer. (Like avira antivirus rescuedisk) Because sometime the virus hide when the cpu start. If you dont boot with xp, and boot with an anti-virus disk, it might find dah virus.

oh man, oh fuck, oh jebus

Totally different problem now.   Really didn't see this coming.

I backed up all the files and drivers I needed onto the larger of my two hard drives and now the computer isn't recognizing it.  Which means I can't install drivers.

Why didn't I think of that.

The problem is that I didn't write any of the parts down, so now I can't remember the exact models of everything.  I'm gonna have to take the whole goddamn computer apart to get the information I need.

Is service pack two installed?  It sounds like the common hard drive is to big for 2002.  Try to upgrade to service pack 2 and if that doesn't work don't do anything with the hard drive or format it because your fucked and you know that, try running some more windows updates and run a linux live boot cd to manual transfer the files from HD to HD inside linux.

Can't connect to the internets except on this computer.  The only way I can transfer data at the moment is on CD.  Every other driver is currently on the HD I can't access.

    Edit:

    Internet!  Hooray!

Anyone still willing to help...  Here's the problems I'm still currently having.  I've got a [/b]PCI Device[/b] that I cannot identify and don't have a driver for.  Same thing goes for the Ethernet controller.

Go go gadget shitty computer specifications!

    Perplexing.

Dominator was right about Windows XP SP1 not being able to recognize drives over 137 GB (completely arbitrary number Go Windows!).  However, my primary hard drive is 200 GB... and it worked right away.

I scratch my head (and then my nuts) and install Windows XP Service Pack 3...  and the computer is still not recognizing my 500 GB drive.  All the drivers are in place, but Western Digital data lifeguard diagnostic tools can't even find the drive to configure it.

    EDIT:

Sony has acquired $26.23 from me.  Not including system restore dvd's in the original packaging is fucking evil Sony.  For shame.

Now I must wait 3-7 business days until the precious is delivered by... who the fuck knows.

Stobbin reformat again and leave your HD unpluged that's not working, install SP2 and then reboot and connect the other hard drive, other wise there's certain things that pretty much said to the OS hey man that hd doesn't exists so we should forever say not to even bother to look for it again.

I'm gonna put the computer back to factory settings using the OEM dvd I ordered from Sony.  I still have all the old parts from the stuff I've replaced/upgraded.  Then I'll go through the process of re-upgrading.

    Did that.

Now Windows is recognizing the 500 GB drive...  as a 811 GB drive.

Apparently the original drive was reformatted/partitioned into a 6 GB, 121 GB, and a 184 GB.  Which is impossible, since its only 200 GB in the first place.

    WHAT THE FUCK[/i]

I've unplugged the secondary drive (with all my data) for now.  It wasn't plugged in during the installation process, so I can't imagine that the data was ever touched.

Thats fucked up, you might need to run a file recovery program with that Hard Drive like when I had to because I installed windows XP while the drives where pluged in and it wasn't service pack two so they got fucked.

An easy solution to all your problems, stob, is to download ubuntu onto a usb stick. When you boot that up, you can run linux as if it was a completely new hard drive. It lets you mount windows partitions so you might be able to snoop around and fix whats up.

I procrastinated for over a month.  Wow.

Got my first hard drive back to normal.  200 Gigs.  Fully installed windows.  Happy.

Second drive is still showing up as 811 gigs.  Not happy.  Western Digital data lifeguard tools is telling me that I need to remove a DDO from the drive.  Less happy.  Windows asks me if I would like to reformat the drive if I try to access it.  Furious.

My question is this:  Is there any chance that I can still recover the data from the drive?  (and Stu should give me a link to the usb unbuntu)

Stobbin, go here: http://lubi.sourceforge.net/unetbootin.html. Its a program that downloads a linux ISO file, then copies it to a usb drive and installs a bootloader too. All you need to do is restart and select the usb drive as the boot device. I would recommend selecting puppy linux as the distro from the drop down menu because its really fast and small too (~50mb) and boots entirely to the RAM so no HDD is needed for it to go.

Edit: also forgot you can access the HDDs without the PC freezing, it'll allow you to move shit from place to place without the pc freezing. Assuming you're still having troubles?
