You might also consider using effects for the text (outer glow, emboss, stuff like that) to make it stand out a bit more from the background. Agreeing with everyone on the size, and i think 400x125 is a good size to work with. Also, i think it could do with a bit of a border around the edges.

well all u really did was stick a pic over a backround, puts some effects in there like on my sig how theres particles in teh back that adds some contrast, and ur text if not placed ever so right or too big can totally ruin a sig

wow i didn't realize gfx void was still around, and your work is comming along nicely there hoss. You should talk to Staff, Dom, Lanu, And of course 8tails, They are really good with there text stuff. As for brushes and other background work, Duplicate with alt+ctrl+shift+E and practice with filters and blending options. Then mess around with Image+Adjustments. After you get these basics down you'll be cruisin through this shit.
