Hey guys, I have an old crappy computer which struggles with games. Lately it has been completely freezing while playing TF2 - Yay! I heard of this software, I didn't know if anyone had ever tried it or could recommend it: http://www.iobit.com/gamebooster.htmlI am also considering just blowing away my hard drive and starting fresh.

Idk about that program, I'd reinstall windows and which version of windows are you running? I'd also after installing everything to just install what you need and only let certain things run and boot up, it makes a world of a difference.

I have used gamebooster... All it does is shutdown unneeded apps and system items while you play to free up resources, then turns them back on when you are done.
Also it makes you make wiser choices in Roller-Coaster Tycoon.

Yea its a good idea to reinstall windows every 6 months or so to keep everything fresh. I also always have my hard drive partitioned so that I can my windows files on one section and my other files on a different one so I don't have to keep backing shit up.

Ok so I have two identically drives and a buddy of mine is telling me that I will get the best performance by "striping" them - have you ever heard of that or do you know what it does?
Also, one of the drives had an issue a while back and a computer repair shop had to partition one of the drives because some of the drive was bad. Could I still stripe it if that is the case?

Does he mean setup up a raid? I don't really know the reference he's talking about by striping them.

I found this on wikipedia, I have two hard drives and he says this will improve my performance: In computer data storage, data striping is the technique of segmenting logically sequential data, such as a single file, so that segments can be assigned to multiple physical devices (usually disk drives in the case of RAID storage, or network interfaces in the case of Grid-oriented Storage) in a round-robin fashion and thus written concurrently. This technique is useful if the processor is capable of reading or writing data faster than a single disk can supply or accept it. While data is being transferred from the first disk, the second disk can locate the next segment. Striping can be either of type: coarse or fine. edit: from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_striping

Yea I'm pretty sure thats the setup involving a raid and configuring it to split the files which is faster but not really for gaming, more so loading maps or saving files but your fps wont be that much faster.

Ok - so here's a dumb question - would it help my performance more to have my OS on one of my hard drives and all my programs on another hard drive - because I could swing that with my 2 hard drives as well.

No it would be the same, though it would be better that way only due to the fact that you wont need to back your files up every time you reinstall windows.
