Hi everyone, I am gearing up to buy a gaming laptop and I'm looking for some opinions/suggestions A few notes on what I want need - 1.) Laptop - I travel a lot for my job and I'd like to be able to play games even when I'm out of town
- 2.) Fast processor - my understanding is that the i7 is the fastest thing out there, so I'd at least like that
- 3.) Decent Price - $1,800 or less, less is better if it can handle #4
- 4.) Handles games well - TF2 needs to run like liquid gold on it. I also want it to be able to play StarCraft II on high resolution with 50-60 fps. It will need to be able to handle the new star wars mmo as I have some friends who will play that.
- 5.) Future proof - not really, but i'd like it to work for the next 2-3 years
Also, I've been looking at the Toshiba Quosimo series http://laptops.toshiba.com/laptops/qosmio/X305/inactiveI think Alienware is cool, but i don't feel like paying an extra $300 to be cool, but I'm willing to look at it if the price is the same as the equivalent of competitors Also willing to consider something form ibuypower.com or anywhere else |

ASUS is a good brand or you can try HP, they actually do have some laptops with pretty good video cards.
Most laptops come with a good cpu that can be installed in a laptop. The biggest draw back to any laptop is the video cards because of cooling and space. The biggest thing to look for is the video card, if it has one then most likely everything else is what you want.

cool, thanks Dom - I also ready that just because it the same number of card for a laptop (i.e. it is a ATI Raedon 5436) that doesn't mean that is is necessarily as good as the desktop equivalent. I'm thinking the ASUS but need to read a few more reviews

yeah desktop equivalent of laptop cards have higher timings because they can generate more heat than a laptop card can
but a 5870 lappy card would still kick TF2's ass

Yea it's almost around 25%-50% less performance due to heat like staff said and some have different memory sharing setups.

So... would it be cheaper to buy a laptop that could run tf2/l4d2 etc. at a decent fps with crappy graphics and also purchase a desktop which i can overclock etc to get great performance?

NOOOOOOO don't over clock laptops.... if anything you get like a .02% increase and it runs hotter than shit....
I mean yes you can over clocked but they are already pushed to their limit with the heat limitations and it's not worth it at all unless you want to fix it again after you fucked it up.
Just get a good one with a good g card.

i overclocked my lappy, but I had to do some major stuff to keep it cool
thankfully I now have my uber desktop and no longer need to do anything with the lappy

i don't i think i phrased my question very well
-is it cheaper to buy 2 computers?
1.) Ok laptop that can run TF2 on medium settings
2.) decent desktop that i can overclock etc.
vs.
1.) insanely good laptop

Cheaper to build a desktop with amazing performance....
Laptop per dollar performance is bad....
If you really want a gaming laptop then you gotta pay the money, there are some that you can build yourself but they really end up being more expensive sometimes... or not even worth it. If you just want a laptop to look up pron with while you're on the shitter then get something basic and build a decent gaming PC for like $500...
